Interesting Points along the Way
Barrett Bridge - which carries the railroad across the reservoir. An all
steel structure resting on sturdy piers of mass concrete. The track over the
bridge is 236 feet above low water mark; at flood season the water is
sometimes within a few feet of the roadbed. As your train crosses this
great man-made lake, you get perhaps the best view of this great
irrigation project which is creating untold wealth in the fertile valley lands
below.
The Railroad crosses the Merced River for the second time within 36 miles.
