The Yosemite Valley Railroad maintained several cottages at El Portal. Four on the side of the hill above the tracks. The fifth cottage was near the Yosemite Lumber Company's rails down near the flats by the Merced river. William White often stayed in this cottage when he was visiting El Portal or just fishing.
