R. B. Monnett, 77, Dies Early Today From Bullet Wound
Robert Bruce Monnett, 77, retired Yosemite Valley railroad conductor, brooding over ill health, died in Mercy hospital at 1 a.m. today, seven hours after he fired a bullet into his brain while standing in the back yard of his home at 45 21st street.
It was the second suicide in less than 24 Hours.
Hearing the shot, H. Dutat, a neighbor, was the first to reach the dying man. Dutat called another neighbor, Dr. Fred Lien, who rushed Monnett to the hospital.
Police officers, Fragie and Leap were called as was Deputy Coroner Vernon Ivers. Investigation revealed that one bullet had failed to fire and the victim tried a second time, successfully. The firing pin mark was clearly visible on the shell which failed to explode.
Private funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. today at Ivers and Alcorn chapel. Cremation will follow in Evergreen crematory.
Mr. Monnett came to Merced 38 years ago, was conductor on the Yosemite Valley railroad until retired on pension several years ago.
His only survivor is his wife Zoie Monnett.
