PIONEER Y. V. ENGINEER DIES

Charles H. Grant, until two years ago an engineer on the Yosemite Valley Railroad almost from the time it started operation, dropped dead of appoplexy in his room in Decatur, Illinois, and services will be held there under the direction of the Locomotive Engineers and Wabash Veterans of Decatur, according to word reaching here today.

Following the wish of Mr. Grant the body will then be taken to Chicago for cremation. A daughter, Mrs. Almer E. Hall of Merced and a son Jesse R. Grant of San Diego, and a grandson, Charles Morrell Grant, are in Decatur for the funeral.

He was born in Ohio in 1863 and to Merced in 1906 to assume the position on the Yosemite Valley line which he gave up two years ago only because of ill health. He lived here until early June of this year when, following a stroke of paralysis, he went to Decatur.

The body of Mrs. Grant, who died some time ago, lies in a Merced cemetery. In addition to the son and daughter three sisters survive, one living in Chicago, another in Detroit and the third in Tulsa, Okla.
