DAVIS DIES IN RAILWAY CRASH

Crashing into a standing work train with the track motor car which he was operating, W. H. Davis, about 60 years old, section foreman for the Yosemite Valley railroad, was fatally injured about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon and died as he was being brought to Mercy hospital for medical attention. The accident occurred about two miles above Merced Falls.

According to W. L. White, manager of the road, Davis had been working with the train all day and was aware of its movement. While about 100 yards from the train, he warned his gang of eight Mexicans on the car with him to jump for their lives, but was unable to save himself as the car headed for the train without diminishing speed, Mr. White said a private investigation revealed last night.

The crew of the work train subscribed to a statement that the train came to a full stop before the accident occurred. None of the Mexicans was hurt. Davis either was unable to stop the car, or became excited in the emergency. He had been in the employ of the railroad for over four years, and is survived by the widow in Snelling.

A coroner's inquest will be held at 7 o'clock tonight at the Welch & Griffin undertaking establishment. Coroner C. E. Welch said today. Funeral services have been arranged for 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Methodist church in Snelling, the Rev. N. F. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Snelling cemetery.
